Posts: 19	rich or lean 08/02/08 at 22:22:06 just did the white spacer mod and not not sure if the mixture screw is set right it does'nt backfire anymore more but exhuast is giving my rear wheel a black powder coat wanted to know if its running to rich or is it going to do that no matter what with the mod to the carb any tips and tricks would be great 1987 savage 650

EDIT: I re-read your post carefully this time

Well... assuming everything is stock, clean and never touched (rejetted) before, and assuming it's the air / fuel adjustment that is the problem and everything else (fuel level in float bowl, dirty air filter, ignition, valves) is OK - turning clockwise (leaning mixture) in your case, on a warm idling engine should cause a slight increase in rpm.
Let's see... First get the engine warm, no choke, idling. Turn the adjusting screw clockwise all the way. Engine should die. It should be about 1.5 turns in, factory setting. Jot down how many turns you had to make. Then turn back out 1.5 turns (360 + 180 degrees), and start from there. Crank up, test drive for few days, note any obvious symtoms (popping, hesitation, black powder

)... Then let us know.

Did I say I re-read carefully? I have not.

White spacer mod? You took it out? That might be givin' too much juice. For some people it seems to be a blessing, others get too rich a mix. Try putting back something 1/2 width of the original spacer first. A washer or two, or shaved white spacer? Whatever works.

Do the steps in previous post after that. It was written for a stock carb. Or near stock, at least.

I will go through all these steps soon. And a rejet. I just installed a cone K&N, my mix is way off (read-lean) now. We are on the opposite sides of the mix, though
