How many miles?

How many miles are on your Savage/S40?

I am looking to buy one for commuting. Looks pretty rugged - wondering how long I might expect it to last.

Thanks,

John

I'm around 8500 right now.  My parts bike had 19,000 on it when the dumb P.O. ran it out of oil and seized up the engine.  I'm told it was running good right up until the CLUNK.

I picked up a 2000 late 2004 with just over 5K on it.  I live four miles from work, with a 8 to 38 mile daily commute (some days the bike just doesn't want to go home.)  Also ran it to OKC and back a year ago, superslab out and two-lane return.  It now has over 24K and I really really ought to at least look at the spark plug.

Just put on a set of Metezlers, so it has to last at least another 25K to wear out the front tire.

I saw one that was looking pretty ragged in a Wal mart lot with (IIRC) over 80,000 on it. Mine only has 18,000 on it & it isnt threatening to roll over & die.

2001 with 12,500 on it. I bought it in March with about 8400 on it. I'm planning on riding it until it either falls apart or I win the lottery.

Guess that means I'll have it for a long time.  Smiley

9,000 mi. for me on a 98 LS650. With this site,  contributer mods and synthetic oil I am optimistic about hitting 20-30k be for she gets left for a yonger, prettier smelling S40.

I bought my used 2000 two almost three years ago with 9k on it. It's got 24k on it now. I've done nothing to the engine but change the oil (synth) and goop up the rubber plug to stop the oil seep there. Oh yeah, and ride it hard all over the eastern half of the country. Still runs strong, but I'm going to do some preventative stuff (cam chain) before the next long trip (4k+) it goes on.

the only major mechanical problem related to lots of miles is cam chain wear, which usually becomes a problem between 12k and 20k (it can often be fatal.)  It's not too bad of a fix if you get Verslagen's chain tensioner upgrade which prevents the assembly from separating into your engine when it extends beyond its maximum ability.

If you do a Verslaggy cam chain modification and keep up with it every 20-30,000 miles, who knows how long you can go.  Bikes tend to die from accident or neglect -- very rarely does a bike get to wear out.
