I do not know of any State regulation that requires a vehicle to have DOT approved equipment on it. DOT is Federal and claim authority over what can be sold thru interstate commerce. What is legal for use on a vehicle depends upon State law -- and the States generally only require you meet performance limits, how you do so doesn't matter.

I just researched this for someone else, although they weren't in New Mexico. Some state regulations merely state that the equipment must meet DOT requirements. As I recall, the item in question at that time was a turn signal.

Reply #11 - 08/03/08 at 20:07:18 I know here they are a bit iffy on signals.. There is no requirement for them but they are quite adamant that a bike have them if it is of a certain timeframe.
