First oil change- Thanks Savage Greg!

So, I just turned over my first 2,000 miles on the Savage I bought in May (Had 5,600 on it).  Didn't know when the oil had been changed last, but it was looking pretty grim.  I looked over Savage Greg's post from the Tech section for guidance before hand and then jumped right in.  It took about 10 minutes to change the oil and put in a new filter.  Total cost was about $12.  Too easy.

Yep.  It's a snap.  I've still gotta pick up a cake pan or something.  The big rubber pan I use for my truck is a PITA to get under the bike.

Will that hold two quarts and still let me carry it across the yard to my waste oil receptacle without spilling?  I hadn't even thought of using one of those.  I have plenty of old ones.  I'll give it a whirl.

Thanks Al.

I used two milk jugs I cut down to fit under the bike.  Filled the one, then slid the other under.  Put them both in one of the kid's plastic beach buckets, wrapped it in a garbage bag.  Now I just have to figure out where the local disposal site is...

A 1 gallon oil jug, laid on the side & use a razor blade, cut the side open. Leave it somewhat closed down by the screw cap,( keep the cap on it) then its easy to pour out, into the waste oil container.

Our local Jiffy Lube shop takes used oil. I can drop it off on the way to work one morning.

Go to www.earth911.org - they have a list of the local recycling centers for everything.

I still need to get all of my used oil the Checker Auto. They're the only ones in my town that lets customers bring in old oil for recycling.

Aren't you in ABQ? I know Jiffy Lube and Autozone on San Mateo will take it. Walmart on Carlisle and Pep Boys on Central.

My sister lives in ABQ.  Smiley

No problem, at least I DO have a place that will take my used oil. I just need to get it over there.

I use a dish pan from the Dollar Store....It's about 12 x 9 inches, and 5 inches deep..catches every drop......I use the old oil for my yard toys....I take a paint brush, and paint the oil on the underside of my ride on mower, and 2 push mowers....keeps grass from sticking under the decks....I also use it on my trimmer blades, and bicycle chains, etc....I know it isn't exactly 100% environmentally correct, but it's better than dumping it somewhere.

I also remember my first savage oil change....My knees were shaking, I was sweating, and my heart was pounding.....That was just thinking about it......Imagine my surprise when I was done in 15 minutes, and out riding.  Grin Roll Eyes

Yeah, I wasn't really nervous.  I'd done all the maintenance on my old Chevy when I was in high school and college, but then I went and started buying late model cars that require an engine lift and NASA's tech support to change the spark plugs.  So I hadn't really turned a wrench in over 10 years.  I was a bit worried about losing pieces as I'm still not overly familiar with what goes where on the bike.  I've been trying to read through the Clymer and the Tech section on here, but I've still got a lot to learn.  Just wish I had more time to spend playing with the thing.

Thanks Little Bird.  I guess any Wal-Mart, O'Reilly or AutoZone will take it.  Cool.
