Adifferent kind of seat mod...with pics

Here is my solution for the dreaded "Deadbutt" that we get while riding our savages/s40s.

In the first pic. You can see that I have raised the front seat connection point by 2 inches. I used 3/8 id plactic pipe as the spacers.

In the second picture, you can see that I drilled two small holes and screwed in to sheet metal screws to keep the secondary seat supports in line with the frame.

Now for the mods to the seat itself. If you turn your seat upside-down, there are two rubber stoppers. I pulled these off. There is a hole where there were. I took a piece of 3/8 inch wooden dowel and sanded it so that the end of the dowel will fit in the holes. Then I sanded a concave face into the 3/8 pipe where it will sit on the frame. (the screwheads of the sheet metal screws fit inside the pipe ends to help keep them from moving around.

This finishes the front of the seat. After I raised the front, I realized there was a lot of space between the rubber cushion under the seat and the frame. I cut two pieces of wood (1 for each side) and using an old piece of inner tube, I fastened these wood pieces to the rubber cushion on the bottomside of the seat.

All I did was remove the bolts and instead of using 2 bolts to hold the bracket, I offset it and moved it back the length of the bracket and used just one bolt to hold it. Now put the seat back on, and this is what it should look like.

The spacer pipes on the front mount are 2", as are the seat support pipes. The wooden spacers are 1" tall.

I fastened the wooden blocks with a piece of rubber from an old inner tube. I took rubber cement and glued the inner tube piece to the side of the seat rubber then put the block on top of the seat rubber and wrapped the inner tube piece around it and rubber cemented it in place. Then I took my staple gun and stapled it in a few places so the rubber wouldn't move.

After I raised the seat,last year,the middle felt sunken like it had no foam,very uncomfortable.

Well, the mod allows me to ride farther back on the seat, plus, with the height adjusted, I noticed a change in my leg angle. I was planning on installing Ed.L's forward controls, but now, I am not so sure. I was trying to see how it would feel...like sitting in a lounge chair.

So, the comfort level is improved for me. I'm 5'11 and 230 lbs. So anything I can do for my butt is welcomed.

PS, since the mod, I have moved the pillion seat back as well, about 1 inch or so. My daughter says it takes a lot of the vibration away because now the seat is tight against the sissy bar.
