Did the petcock modification
07/21/08 at 17:21:51

I have been running for about 6 month now on PRI and keeping track of the miles on each tank.  I finally got tired to dealing with it this way and with the "dragon ride" coming up, I needed to change my plug anyway.  So I figured I had might as well do the mod.  As far as the directions in the tech section, they were  perfect...I am now just waiting to see how things go.  I used RTV to help seal the old diaphram gasket and will know more in the morning.

If it doesn't work, I am still not out anything, because I was going to have to purchase a petcock anyway.

Yep, let the RTV setup over night.  Took the little girl out this morning.  I knew I was low on fuel (still thinking 110 miles per tank) so I left it on "run".  Got 6 miles from home and..........poof....run out of gas...calmly pushed it over to "reserve" and gave it a crank.....braaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaappppppppppp...she popped to life and I then figured I had 20 miles or so to get gas....

No leaks and runs good............

Job well done and yep...I be converted now. Wink

What exactly is this petcock mod that you speak of?  I have tried searching the tech section but can't find it.  I ask because the petcock on my 07' seems to work just fine and I am wondering what exactly needs to be modified on it.

like the old saying..."if it ain't broke...don't fix it."  Go to the tech section, page 6, second from the bottom.  Explains it all.

My petcock was bad...had a leaking (sometimes) diaphram...but my bike is a '95 to.

I just did the mod on my '88. I can't believe it lasted 20 years. The bike was stalling, bogging, lagging, etc., even in PRI. Did the mod, she's soooo smooth now. Just make sure you cap off the vac ports properly!!

I don't understand the reasoning for the petcock modification. Doing the modification requires all the work to take it apart. Why not just replace the bad diaphragm and fix the thing so it works?

You can't buy the diaphragm.  Gotta buy the whole petcock.
