Air/fuel Mixture screwed
07/19/08 at 14:18:28

I figure I might be screwed here. I just bought a bike and it looks like many people have adjusted the air/fuel mix screw. Its an 1987 savage in CA. with 12,000. I am trying to adjust the screw to tune it in but the screw only goes to 1.3 turns. I think whoever had the bike last damaged the threads so I cannot unscrew it anymore to tune it up Does this mean I am forever stuck in the lean position until I get a new carb? That made me think of a joke.

Q. What is the difference between a pregnant woman and the air fuel adjustment?

A. You can unscrew the adjustment . . . (usually)

It is possible that the brass plug was not removed cleanly. causing the screw to get stuck.

Use a good penetrating oil to soften the thread gunk. Sounds like there may be something in there. Or, maybe someone did goof the threads, but, since the pronblem lies between you & the top thread on the screw, you can see it,

My '87, with 11,000 miles, suffers from the very same affliction. I am at 1 1/2 turns out and froze up. And the slot in the screw is boogered up, so I can't go in or out. It used to work fine, back when I rebuilt it last summer. I was putzing around one day, screwed it in and started counting as I screwed it out. Got to 1 1/2 and she froze up. I've been running real lean ever since. My exhaust pipe is dark blue, flowing into a shiny golden colour. Some guy was gonna sell me an old carb in peices, but I never heard back from him. It's going in for a new clutch next week--maybe they can free it up.....

You could buy the tools & plenty of beer for the labor you will spend.

Probably won't need a lot of tools, but beer will be needed of course. The screw now looks like it has an hourglass shape to its head. It looks like I might strip it if I try to hard. Any other suggestions? I don't really want to use a screw extractor (gasp).

The hole the brass plug was stuffed into is cosmetic. It can be ground away with a dremel & access to the screw made better. A slot can be cut into the screw head & try to turn it. If it breaks off, grind away & work on the body of the screw, instead of a wimpy little disk of brass on a skinny stick. You can win this.
