Mine's a little better on dirt trails, washboards, dips and gravel, than the stock Savage, but it sounds like you might need a real dp bike, like my old Yamaha xt225 Serow.  That was a great one in the rough.  And it would cruise at 65mph.

Shame you're on the other coast,  my friend has a Yamamha XT 550  Enduro for sale.

Go darkside and put this on the standard rim as it will grip on slippery wet snow, so your standard mud & dirt likely isn't going to be any sort of issue to it.  It, like a set of normal knobbies, won't last all that long.   You will like the wet paved road performance of this tire a lot better than knobbies though.

Up to an 18" rear wheel is not a problem with slight modification of the swingarm in the front section. See Out There Kustom Shop.com for pics of one already done. K.J.

Jim, I've noticed your 18" wheel before.  How did you do that?  Did you find a wheel that works, or put a new rim and spokes on the Savage hub?

Gary, yeah i found a 36 spoke "18" rim and laced it to the Savage hub. Will have new "18","16" and"21" rims for the Savage this year.K.J.

I gotta say, though...

the Savage certainly has a great engine, but the wrong riding stance.

One would need a wider, flatter set of handlebars, and pull the riding pegs a good 3 inches backwards.

AND fit taller rear suspension.

AND do the chain conversion in order to "toggle" road/off road final drive ratio with possibly a 15 & 17 tooth front sprocket to swap by the roadside.

Then, only then, could one start riding offroad.

PS To all those who've done the chain conversion, would it be possible to have two front sprockets side by side?
i.e. 17 & 13 ? (biggest and smallest)
Perhaps with two rear sprockets of compatible length, i.e. 45 & 46?
That would provide road&track ratios by a mere flip of the chain from one set of sprockets to the next  Cool
