Steering Head Bearing Races
07/09/08 at 05:28:18
Hi, I have a '99 Savage. How hard is it to get the steering head bearing races out? Any tips?
Would it be better to just get another set, and if so does anyone have a good idea where to find them? Is that same part used on other Suzuki bikes?
Thanks!

Are yours bad??? There are high speed bearings in a low speed application. Should last a long time. Bad would manifest as bumpy turning. Stiff or loose turning can be adjusted .
But anyway, the Factory manual shows them being driven out with special tool. Basically, it looks like they would come out very much like the races of a trailer hub. Using a brass drift-pin and hammer, tap side to side. Don't get it wedged by hitting too hard on one side.

The bearing races are fairly easy to get out in my opinion. I removed the ones out of my 87 frame with no difficulty.
