Gas Tank Capacity

Ok...I'm SURE this has already been discussed...but I couldn't find it by doing a search. Sorry.  Embarrassed

I need to know what the capacity of my 96 Savage's gas tank is. I'm guessing...including reserve.

Thanks!!!!!

Put the petcock on prime, ride 'til it dies, push to a gas station and fill to the rim.

My tank takes 2.93 gallons -- yours may be different.

what do you guys use as a stopping point when gassing up?  Do you let the nozzle stop on its own as you would with a car or do you look in and stop it at a certain point?

I've stopping the flow manually at the bottom of the filler neck to get as consistant of a fill as i can for mileage purposes.

i watch as i fill never have trusted the auto shut off.  i had a proble a couple of months ago  was filling let go of handle thing just kept a pumping. i threw it down and pushed off..  it shut off when it hit the ground.

i always straddle the bike in nuetral just incase something like that happens, and it does..

I NEVER fuel the  bike while sitting on it. I don't particularly want to wear the fuel if it overflows, or I slip with the nozzle. It isn't likely, but it is possible for the fuel to ignite if it happens to spill onto the hot engine or exhaust pipe. And I figure I have to get off to go pay, or go use the restroom, so I just get off in the first place.

I always fill the tank until the pump says I have put two gallons in.  I have found that if I put much more in, I end up with fuel leaking out of the cap in hard turns.

I checked my factory workshop manual for my 2008 S40.  They all appear to be the same through all years 10.5 liters including reserve.  So that's 8.0 + 2.5 reserve.

I did notice a change in the engine oil capacity spec.  The 96 model is 2.4 liters for an oil and filter change.  The 08 is only 2.0 liters for the same oil and filter change.

I filled up last night (2.09 gallon @ 106 miles) tryin to get it to the bottom of the neck for consistency.  Still did a nice vomit past the cap when I stood Betty.  I thought the cap usually sealed better than that.

Especially in Summer, leave a little room for expansion; although a crotch full of gasoline  did stop the dog from getting to chummy. Wink

I filled up yesterday 2.25 gals/130 miles = 57.77 mpg. Not bad for around town. I fill it to the bottom of the filler tube everytime. I usually fill up at 100 miles but was pushing it yesterday.
