Isn't it aggrivating; stopped by the local Sears to get a 17mm 1/2 drive socket- nope, out of stock. Unbelievable.

I used an 18mm, but I also have an NGK IR spark plus. At walmart they have stanely sockets for like 20ish bucks. They are long and thin enough to reach just fine, at least on my 05. I hope this helps.

Bench grinders have been known to make thin walled sockets out of thick walled sockets, if its just gotta happen.

That is exactly why I don't mind having some "cheap" tools laying around, then I can cut them up, and make different things out of them with no regrets.

After reading about all the confusion around the spark plug socket for this bike, I just sucked it up, went to the dealer, and bought the one they recommended. It was money well spent. Just keep it under lock and key so your son doesn't try to hammer it into an arrowhead or something.
Which reminds me... Anyone know how to unhammer a fourteen-old? I might need to do some straightening on one soon. At least my tools will be safe for awhile, though.

I envy you. Our two sons struggle to correctly hold a hammer as they suffer from a strain of Video Gamers Syndrome. Go with it man and be greatful he wants to hammer away.

Or demonstrate the proper use of a hammer by applying it to the video game system. Two birds, one stone.
