new exhaust.... stalling!
06/27/08 at 15:11:21

So i just put on my new screaming eagle straight cut pipe. Its LOUD! maybe too loud.

Problem... it wont run for more than 5 minutes. I installed a 150 main jet. but left the pilot stock.

it runs the most with the air jet adjuster almost all the way in. 1/2 turn out.

i cant seem to figure out what the problem is? Do i need the pilot jet?

Ohhhh   with a Screaming Eagle that pilot jet (stock) should be out 2 or even to the max of 3.
Set it at  2 turns out and then adjust from there.  First go clockwise till the idle drops ever so slightly. Then go counter clockwise thru the peak idle and find the other side where the idle drop on a rich condition.  Then go somewhere in between and try to be on the slghtly rich side.  If you have to go over 3 turns out, you may want to up the pilot jet a step.

Note: you may also need a 152.5 main..... but get it running first before going up again on the main.

good to know... ill try it again.

i also just noticed i have a leak where i clamped it. the SE doesnt quite fit on like my stock pipe does, its a bit too small. looks like ill have to make some kind of gasket.

i just brought the adjuster about 2.7 turns out and it seems to be running great at idle (afraid to ride it!).

are these mufflers usually obscenely loud? mine almost sounds like a striaght pipe. would a leak cause it to be louder?

yeah my pipe is superbly loud, makes all the cars on the road look out for you which equals safety in my books. I used a substance called permatex to seal the leak in my header then used a foil that came with muffler wrap. I put the permatex gold over the wedges of he header, filled them in and then wrapped the foil over them. Let it cure over night. Now I have to figure why I cut out in first and second gear.

On my aftermarket Dyna SE, I used a piece of aluminum that was thicker than paper but thinner than a credit card.  I rolled it and have about an inch of over lap.  Then, I used muffler patch, tan stuff that comes in a tube from auto zone.  Used it to fill the voids.  It gets hard unlike some of the other high temp sealers.   You have to watch some of the hi temp sealers because thay are only "sort of" hi temp.  The exhaust pipe gets really really really really hot.

So the bikes running great now.

BUT heres the weird part. i need to have the petcock on "RES" to keep it running. once i put it to "ON" the bike stalls within 5 minutes.

what does this mean? does it hurt my bike to run on "reserve"?

It means your bike is just like mine, I do the same.
Did you replace the vac line?  use clamps to seal both ends?
I did take apart the petcock, maybe it didn't go back together correctly.  someday...
