Sealing Wire Wheels for Tubeless Tires
06/19/08 at 14:20:34
Took a little 30 mile putt over to
Wheel Works in Garden Grove
to chat with Dave about sealing my wheels and mounting a set of Metezlers.
The Good News? I'd do business with Dave Newton anytime -- dude is an upfront and honest biker, more concerned about quality and safety than profit.
The bad news? Dave Newton is an upfront and honest biker, more concerned about quality and safety than profit; and wouldn't touch Thumper's wheels. "Older wheels, just the slightest bit of rust and they lose sealing in a year od so -- only do new wheels. And even then, your center has just the slightest bulge -- need a deep drop center so that the tire will still mount after the wheel is sealed." <points to the wheels of the Harley I'm parked next to> (paraphrased)
So it looks like I'll be ordering tubes and rimstrips when I get around to ordering my Metezlers.

Putting tubeless tyres on a spoked wheel is a nice idea, but think about it.
With a tubless rim, when you have just one hole to worry about (the valve orifice) you get leakage all too often. With a spoked wheel, whatever the clever way of sealing, you have an extra 40 or so holes to deal with.
If I think about the number of times I've had to fix a leaky valve seal, and multiply that by 40, I'd rather walk!

Dave Newton doesn't get complaints of leakage if he starts with a rust free wheel with a dropped center. Which is why I opted to go with a professional.

Even if your wheels were new are you saying there is not enough drop in the center to mount a tire if they are sealed using his method???

That's what I gathered. To mount a tire the far side drops into the center of the rim so that the near side can slip over the rim. Without the dropped center there is not enough depth to do so once the rim has been sealed.
Win some. Lose some. Some get rained out.

Heck, he would be first to knopw its a bad idea. Soon as the rims are sealed, he would need to mount the tire.He doesnt want to seal a rim, only to be unable to mount the tire on it.Surely, he breaks them down & remounts??

Hmmmmmm ...... I thought the tire we use were also used on bikes with "tube-less" wheels. If our rims weren't deep... then the tires should be hard to mount .... or
am I looking at this wrong
.....
I myself don't mind the tube. Had just as much luck & also misfortune with tuded tires as with tubeless. A quick repair is easier on a tubeless tire. But.... I've always felt that a motorcycle trie with a rubber plug in it should be replaced as soon as possible. Where putting in a new tube is totally acceptable.....

you can always add a tube to a tubeless tire.

Ya gotta shut one eye and squint with the other.
Using tubes, the spoke holes are covered by the rim strip which is like a 16th of an inch or less. The buildup of materials to seal the spoke holes could be a quarter inch -- a tire that would squeeze onto a stock rim wouldn't with a quarter inch less wiggle room.
