Tube?
06/18/08 at 06:05:31

So, I just finished my first commute by motorcycle ever.  When I got to work, I dismounted, took a depth breath and basked in the glory that is riding.

While basking, I noticed two things about my little thumper.

First, there is a tube hanging down at the bottom.  I'm 90% sure that wasn't there when I left for my commute.  I did a quick glance over but maybe I just missed it in my excitement to get on the road.  I seem to recall reading there is supposed to be a tube hanging down for draining something but I can't find the thread (I did do some searches, just nothing useful came up).  Is that normal?

The other thing: it looked like there was a wet spot on the cylinder casing.  Is that normal?  Condensation from heat, slight oil leak?  I'm completely clueless about the repair/operation of a bike.  I've been reading up so I know where everything is so far but that's about it.  Buying my Clymer manual next week (hope I don't need it yet).

Thanks for any input you might be able to provide...

No fear, that's for the battery and it's supposed to be there.  It freaked me out once too. ha  As for the leak, wait a few hours till it cools and then inspect the area.  Water is nothing to worry about if that's what it is.  If it's oil, wipe it off as thoroughly as you can and then check it tomorrow or the next day.  If the oil is back, you may have a problem.  What year is the bike and what is it's condition ... new, used?

Ah, sweet.  Good news about the tube.  It did spook me a bit.

Thanks for the tip on the possible "leak."  I'll wipe it down and keep an eye on it.  It's only a 2003, bought it used from a dealer with only 768 miles on it about 2 weeks ago.  Cool  Besides a small scratch on the pipe, it looked brand new.

also a tube comes out from the bottom of the air box - it should have plastic plug in the end - this collects oil condensed in the airbox and should be drained by pulling the plug - perhaps at each oil change

I KNEW I was forgetting something!  I've meant to drain that tube 2 or 3 times and keep forgetting.  Thanx, Reelthing.
