She's a Squealer

My '98 squeals in 5th gear. By sqeuals, I mean "You ever heard the most annoying sound in the world? EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" -Dumb and Dumber It sounds like it's coming from inside the engine. She seems to be running fine, so I'm not really worried, but it is annoying. This is not a new noise, though it does seem to be getting louder with the 100'+ weather we're having here in central Texas. Any thoughts?

Bet it's either your belt or your speedo.
Mash your hand down on the speedo and see if it changes the sound.
Spray something on the belt, anything, and see if the noise changes.
If it's not one of those, you may be in trouble.

So it's not rpm related?
as soon as you're in 5th.

Leave it in fourth?
I'm reminded of the old routine... "Hey doc, it hurts when I do this!"
"Den don' do dat!"

no and yes. It doesn't seem to be rpm related. it starts as soon as I put it into 5th and stays constant, not varying with the speed of the motor. Don't think it's the belt, the squeal was happening before the rear wheel alignment I did about 2 weeks ago, and is still happening. Pressed on the speedo. No luck. Checking the bearings sounds like something best saved for a weekend. I'm about to pull out my clymers and give it a look see. Never messed with bearings before.

Bearings for 5th are the same bearings for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th...... one each side of the engine cases for main and then again for the intermediate shaft.
If it's a "load" related squeal, you should be able to get it in fourth too.
If it's a speed related squeal, then you will need to find a safe empty road and take the helmet off and ride a bit.
