Feeling stupid

Okay, as ya'll know I have put on a Road King tank with manual petcock. I really need to learn to shut the fuel off every time I kill the engine. Went to a friends house and forgot to turn off fuel and you uessed it, flooded it badly. Took me an hour of letting it sit before I was able to crank it up and fire it over.

I have two questions regarding that, in case it ever happens to me.

1.) With all the old cars I ever owned, if one was flooded I would just push the foot feed all the way to the floor and turn the motor over until it cleared its throat.  Would that work on this system?

2.) Would just draining the bowl on your friend's driveway do any good?  Or is it more complicated than that?
Huh

put a hole in the petcock lever and a lanyard for your keys that will clip into the hole.

I tried the wide open throttle while cranking and all I accomplished was killing my battery. Had to have my friend jump start it to fire it over. (but remember, I am still having carb problems as well)

Yea, good idea not to leave the carb with a loaded fuel line trying to fill it up, But, Shouldnt the thing have held the gas back & not loaded the cylinder?

Seems to me, the basic idea of flooring the flooded car should apply, Giving it max air, trying to get the gas to burn.
Izzat the way it goes REal Mechanics?

I'm still trying to figure out what letting it sit for an hour did to things.  That gas had to go somewhere in that hour.  My money says it went down, into the oil.

Like the man said, we need a mechanic in here.

If it were me, I'd be inspecting the needle valve and seat in that carburetor.

You'd have to track it down at the landfill first.  He's gone through two other carbs since this thread was started.  He just buys something, wears it for a day, and gets a new one.   Smiley

Actually all of that mess is taken care of. Now I just got to remember to turn the fuel ON when I take off. I have turning off on shutdown pretty well established now.

Gosh - I sure do like that automatic vacuum-operated petcock. Don't know that I'd ever want to go back to the primitive manual ones.

The reason I went with manual and not vacuum was because of price. A Harley vac petcock was almost two hundred bucks while the manual was about twenty.

my vaccuum is broken so I have to run it in prime- its not hard to condition yourself to include the petcock in the routine of getting on and off the bike.

I like the lanyard idea for off. How about a lable maker and "fuel on" to put on the speedo. That way maybe you'll see it before you crank the battery to zilch trying to turn it over with no fuel.
My 0.02. cents; and remember, free advice is usually worth what you pay for it. Wink
