My seat modification for tall people – with pics

Hi all, this website is the most complete repository of LS650 information in the world, kudos to you all!

I bought a used 2007 S40, its my first bike.  I enjoy it, its inexpensive, lightweight, nimble, and gets excellent gas mileage.
I have one major complaint – the seat is horrible for tall people.

I’m 6’2” and the hump in the seat forces me forward into a cramped position.
I read all the seat and forward control mods and decided to remove the hump.

I cut out strips of carpet padding, stacked and glued them together, and secured them to the seat with string.
I bought a motorcycle seat cover on eBay for $39 and tied it using wire.  Total mod cost was about $50.
By flattening and raising the seat I can now sit back further.  I’ve been riding for a month like this and its wonderful.

This mod is completely removable, I can revert back anytime if desired.

I know it doesn’t look pretty because its not professionally upholstered, but it feels great so I’m happy.

Here are my pics: http://tightwadweb.com/seatmod.html

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut between the seat and the handlebars. Make sure yours isn't too tight or too loose.

You did good.  If you don't mind, a repost in the tech section with the images in the message rather than a link would be appreciated by a lot of taller riders.

I like that! Expecially the fact that you can take it off easily if you want to!!

So it dosent move around....And you have no problem with it staying there/in place?

I had read somewhere to use carpet padding ,so I was looking into that part.....Cool!

(since I cant afford the air hawk yet)

Ok,sorry I looked at it again, and see better what you did....you have the original seat and padding, the whole thing wrapped/covered.

I see its tightly done....and the carpet padding should stay in one place, right?

I have the solo drivers seat that I want to do.Reason for my questions. Smiley

that's right, it wrapped up tight.  It does not shift around because the 5 strings are wrapped underneath the seat strap.

That's similar to what I did on mine.  You won't regret it for an instant.  I am so much more comfortable now.  I can ride, and ride, and...

Thanks!!
I dont have a seat strap on the solo/drivers seat, but I can wrap the strings under the seat maybe Undecided Or just try to get it on as tight as possible.

I wouldnt think carpet padding would slide anyway Undecided

I'm definitely going to try it Wink

(I'm paying out so much on my medical insurance deductible that this is perfect solution for me...I needed a cheaper way Wink

This seems to be almost  a response to another recent post inquiring about bench seating- which allows a rider to scoot around a bit.  Looks like an interesting mod..good job.
