Not just for performance, but what have you done that made working on, riding  or looking at, your bike better for you? If you were just getting your bike, whats the first thing you would do, to make it more "user friendly"?

As often as the seat has to come off, the first thing I would have done would have been the Long Allen heads with the jam nuts. Whoever thought that one up was on the ball. That, & the plug door.

I will hijack my own thread for a sec. Last night ( after topping the oil) I grabbed my washer, cut to fit the slot & mounted on a bolt, & twisted on the timing plug. NO Sweat, came right off, even tho I added a bit of grunt after it bottomed out when I put it in last. Looing at it, I could see I had used antisieze, so I doctored it again & slapped it in. Antisieze, a Must Have.

My seat.  Definitely my seat.  Or my trip meter.  Or the XM radio.  Maybe the brighter headlight...    Nope, it's the seat.

I'm not tracking on that washer setup.  Sounds like just what I need though.  Gotta pic?

Hijackers work better in pairs, don't they?

Favourite mod?  Progressive rear shocks. (made all the difference in the world!)

Most effective mod?  Removing the white spacer and tuning the carb.

Most difficult mod?  Installing the sportster pipe.  (wasn't hard at all, but was the hardest thing I did.)

Changing the handle bars and risers to fit me has to rank number 1 according to the definition of this thread.
#2 would be the speed pins holding my sportster seat on.
#3 is my verslavy.
#4 is going tubeless.

Five words that thrill:

I needed transportation, the deal to get my retired company van fell thru, the wife asked, "Have you considered a motorcycle"

My bike is my primary transportation, it takes me to work, takes me shopping, etc..  I need sufficient lockable storage.  The first thing I got for the bike were my Leatherlyke saddle bags.  Love 'em.

The washer to pull & install the timing plug.
I had a bolt( 5/16thish) with an upset at the end of about 1/2 inch of threads, (but 2 nuts jammed would do it). I found a washer, about 2 inches across, about 1/8th thick , as thick as you can find & still fit in the slot is what ya want. Before mounting the washer on the bolt, tho, fit it to the slot. Cut it almost flat across one side, so that it fills the length of the slot & the contour allows it to go to the bottom of the slot. Then, I used a smaller washer to support the main washer. It goes out almost to the edge & is cut to almost be touching the plug when the main wsher is in the slot. So, what ya have is, a couple of washers, with a bolt going thru & nuts on each side of the washers, to keep them on the bolt. My bolt is about 4". So far, I havent had to crank on it hard enough to bend the washe. I bet I never do. I wouldntr be afraid to just use the one heavy washer. IIRC, the reason the second washer is there is because the upset on the bolt & that washer were made for each other, so using it was kinf of a Have To deal.

I hope that wasnt too spastic an explanation, Sandy. If so, let me know..Ill try again

Think I got it.  I was picturing a washer welded to the end of the bolt, with a ratchet to turn the whole works.  I'm not much of a welder.  What you are describing is much more my speed.  Just spastic enough to come down to my level.

Thanks.

1: Right now,  the 30" fishtail pipe and wrapped exhaust header. I can't stop looking at it. And the sound. Wicked Pissah!
2: O-ring grips and pegs and on highway bar.
3: Started working on jet kit and spacer mod today, not finished yet, but hopefully another great mod.

I'm starting to enjoy tweeking on the bike much more than I thought I would.  Cheesy
