Whine on decelleration
05/30/08 at 08:04:15

Hi,
I just sold my superglide and bought a 2006 s40 with 4600 miles on it. While the power difference is tremendous I really enjoy the weight difference and the double gas mileage. It has a whine when letting off the throttle in 5th gear. It reminds me of a worn ring and pinion, but a little higher pitch. It does it some in 4th , but not as loud. Is this Normal? It doesn't do it in 1st 2nd or 3rd. It also has a rattle coming from the rear pully at no load highway speed.

I have a wine also and i don't know what it is, but the rattle sounds like you need the verslavey.

I would disagree on the rattle.

Check the torque on the drive pulley nut.

Also check driven pulley bearing.

I would also suggest checking the belt tension.  I have heard that same whine noise on decel when my belt was a bit loose.  I half turn on the tensioning bolts was enough to get rid of it.

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut between the seat and the handlebars. Make sure yours isn't too tight or too loose.

Maybe it's a different whine entirely, but I thought my bike was surely dying a painful death.  Drove me crazy for days.  I finally touched the speedometer and it quit instantly.  My hearing ain't so great, so what some describe as a rattle or buzz sounded to me like a high-pitched squeal.

Just a thought.

Fixin the speedo buzz is easy. Depending on ones willingness to have it be a visible reapair, then it could get REAL easy. I stuck a thin foam under mine & stopped it, so, some 2 sidded sticky foam tape COUld be jammed under it, possibly without pulling the tank. It would leave a gap, tho. I wuldnt do it.. way too anal about stuff like that.

Yep, I shoved some black felt under mine and it quit.  Then the felt blew out so I'm back where I started.  Gotta take a little time and do it right, but I think that's the right track to follow.

Thanks for all the information. I've been hauling hay and haven't had time to look at it.Today I'll check the belt and if that doesn't work I'll check the drive pully and nut. I seems to come from the drive pully area.  I hope it's not output shaft bearing.
