Seriously, to break the ton on a Savage requires three things.

First, get yourself a Sigma Sports electronic speedo and adjust it using mile markers 20 miles apart as per instructions in the Tech section. This way you know the speed you think you see is very close to reality.

Next, do the chain conversion to get appropriate gear ratios to go 100 mph without overspeeding the motor excessively.

Third, do power hop-ups as mentioned here in a logical sequence to get enough HP to overcome the wind resistance at 100 mph. To keep air resistance at a minimum, lay flat on the tank and go go go ....

Now that you met that personal milestone, you'll never do it again as it is uncomfortable and unnecessary. You will still like the chain conversion and the extra power though as it makes crusing a breeze.

I found the wind noise wasn't so bad once I rolled up the windows and cranked the radio up.

I have traveled the highway exactly once at an indicated 100 mph. It was '64, a '63 Plymounth with the 225 slant six, going back to Detroit after visiting my brother in Navy Boot in or near Chicago. Mom and sis were sleeping, I just kept edging the speed up until I hit that magic number.

Just about then a Caddy passed me doing at least 25 mph faster.

While it is interesting to know that a Savage can do the ton, I have absolutely no desire to do so myself. 0-40 mph?, that I am interested in.

Why is it called doing the ton when you reach 100mph. a ton is 2000lbs, even though the term originated in Europe I am sure that 100mph is NOT 2000kph. So any one want to enlighten me on this?

A unit of internal capacity of a ship equal to 100 cubic feet. is known as a "Ton".

In Britain in the fifties, when bikes were becoming common for teens and the power of some was enough to reach that "Holy Grail", of a "Ton" 100 Miles an Hour. This was the slang of the time, probably imported into the culture via the dockers (Longshoremen)

Back then there was not any "Motorways" interstates i suppose, you would understand them as, but there was "A" Roads some based on Roman routes, which were straight and apart from roads that joined it, gave a good chance of reaching 100 if someone with a slow cage did not get in your way.

Reply #8 - 05/27/08 at 20:54:05 ton is just slang done daily on the guzzi - before you know it in fact ,,, anyway - I'm thinking the '02 will do it for real - have a few gaskets headed in - want to make sure the verslavy is correct, put in a 157.5 last night and lifted the needle another .05 - course it's not stock but does have the stock belt and cylinder bore

As far as I know my '95 is stock (but I'm beginning to suspect the PO possibly rejetted or did the washer mod - if the '95 had the washer)and I wouldnt be surprised to get it to an indicated 100mph. Found myself at 85 in a 55 zone (everyone goes 65-70 though) and the engine was thumping along beautifully. Had PLENTY of throttle left.

Reply #10 - 05/28/08 at 23:04:49 That little run after church the other day sucked a good bit of oil. I hit 80 & a bit over pretty regular, but I held it wide open for a couple of minutes Sunday. The oil consumption is bad at high speeds. Does that mean I need to clean something out?

My '02 does that too. In the beginning I never went over 55 or 60. Then as time went on and I got more confident I started going on the freeway and getting up to 80. That was when I had to start adding oil between oil changes.

Never could get it past 85 though. My 230 lbs and the high altitude here of 5K ft seems to be the limiting factors.

Broke the ton only once on a motorcycle. It was quite a few years back in my wilder and woolier days. It was also a single, but a KLR 650, rejetted and supertrap'd. I was just shy of the needle hitting 120 when my better sense got hold of me and I backed off, lest I became ground round on the ground. Now days I.......
