So do you have to take off the front seat to remove the back seat? I'm trying to throw on some saddlebags.

yes. the bolt that holds the rear seat on is under the front seat

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut between the seat and the handlebars. Make sure yours isn't too tight or too loose.
