I've got too many bikes to put tires on to be spending the money on top-dollar Metzler-Avon etc... And have decided to go the cheap route with Cheng Shin all around on all of them.
The style of Cheng Shins I have chosen are all DOT speed rated and tested "H" for 130mph. I've run the heck out of their cheap tires on dirt bikes without ever having a failure, and I have reasonable confidence in their ability to hold up on the road too. I may not get maximum mileage out of them, but I have seen some of the "cheap" brand tires last 12-15k miles on the rear of light bikes like the Savage and even further on the front. Since I plan on keeping multiple bikes around, my tires are more likely to die from weather cracking (again) than tread wear issues.
Besides all that, I've got some real old-school heavy tread patterns on these tires; which I actually trust more when hitting those occasional sand and gravel patches.
I've discovered that I really dislike these modern nearly slick "sport tour" tires with only a little squiggle of tread on them. Just a tiny little patch of sand, or patch of water and they try to throw you to the ground. I liked the looks of these:
Especially at $130 a pair including new tubes and rim strips, shipping included! I'll report later how I like them once installed. I only have one Cheng Shin on the back of 99 #1 so far, and it has been serving me well for the couple hundred miles I've put on it.
