New (to me) 2002 Savage
05/22/08 at 20:57:15

I picked it up tonight about 30 miles away, rode it home.  This is my first bike, so the ride home started out very nervously.  A few miles later I was more comfortable and enjoying it.

I noticed some popping and huffing (backfiring type sound) while riding, and almost every time I kill the engine.  I will try to pay more attention to when it is happening and research it here.

I am looking forward to learning more about it, and enjoying it even more!

James

If it didn't backfire, it wouldn't be a Savage.  You'll find a lot of tips here to take care of all that.  You might have to do a little carb work.  I kind of liked the backfiring, but the experts here say that the lean condition that causes it makes the engine run too hot, which shortens life.

the 'puff' doesn't bother so much as the louder 'bang' type of sound when I kill the engine.

Linux user huh?  I've been using Linux for almost 10 years.  Anyway, I forgot to say, welcome!  Don't ever lose that nervous feeling completely.  You need to assume the cars out there cannot see you.  If you operate with that assumption, you'll stay out of trouble for the most part.  I see it as a challenge that I enjoy.

Yes, definitely had to change the way I think while riding.  I caught myself in more than a few blind spots, and had to think like I was driving a car and ask myself if I'd be able to see a rider there.

You'll get used to it.  I'm so used to the bang on shut off, that when I got another bike I startled me not to hear the "bang".  It's the savage throwing a fit for having to stop....  Wink

So...what flavor linux?  We've been experimenting with Ubuntu here at work.  Much faster than XP, but since most of development has to be done using XP only software, we really can't justify using Ubuntu.  Some of the guys use Ubuntu exclusively at home.

2x Red Hat server @ work and Fedora Core 6 on a laptop for general familiarization.  I am loving it and wanting to learn more.  Unfortunately the Red Hat servers are managed by the vendor, so I rarely get any admin. experience. Angry
