Miserable Parking Light Setting!!!!!
05/22/08 at 20:09:10

I just went out to go home after a long day at work, and the battery is dead. What dimwit came up with the idea for a "parking" setting?

Can anyone tell me how to permanently disable that "feature"?

Thanks.

Sometimes I wish the LS650 had a kicker as well. That is the only thing I miss about my 76 CB550F. It's always nice for those times.

Look on the wiring diagram for single wire going to the rear light, if I remember correctly it is brown and cut it into and tape up the ends. Max

I looked at the Clymer's wiring diagram. It looks as though it is the brown wire. I'll play with that this weekend when I change the oil.

Thanks

Other option is to pull the wire out of the ign switch connector (bike side) so that you can reinstall it to sell the bike..... when you trade it on on an 2009..... Grin

On most connectos, the metal part inside the plastic holder, has a little tab that holds it in.  A small pointy tool , straight pin or even a DartBoard dart can be used to get the wire & metal end out.

Let me know if you need instructions.....

if you cut the brown youll have no rear running light..quick study of the ssm diagram youd have to got into the switch to disable the parking contact...easier to train your brain left is off....

You could go to a lot of trouble to take the bike aparty and disable that feature, or you could just avoid setting it to park when you take the keys out - most bikes have the park feature, perhaps the key position on the Savage makes it more likely to get it wrong, but a little care should be all that's needed.

If you get stranded at night and had to leave the bike( heaven forbid) at least with the light on it won't get smashed on side of road as easily, or if you have to get off at night to piss alonside the road, nobody can steal your machine while you're taking care of business...that's very common in Nebraska

Peeing by the roadside, or sitting in the dark waiting for someone to stop to pee near enough to you that you can steal their bike?

Sounds like Nebraska needs some skating rinks or other forms of entertainment.

From studying Clymer's circuit diagram, it appears that all I will have to do is pull the brown wire out of the socket and splice it into the same circuit as the ignition. I will have to check the speedometer and the front brake light switch, since Clymer's manual is unclear as to the details.

Why would I want to reset this boobytrap and then foist it off on an innocent party?

This "feature" may have made sense back in the days when bikes had a kick start. However, given the fact that the Savage has no kick starter and a relatively small battery, it is analogous to the human appendix -- nothing but a liability.

In reality, has anyone ever USED the parking lights other than as a novelty?

I left mine on by mistake in the lean-to overnight.  Shut it off about six, came back out at six in the morning and saw the light burning.  Sinking feeling in tummy.  I thought I might as well try the starter once anyway.  It fired right up.  I wouldn't want to repeat the experiment, but I got 12 hours out of it that time.
