When do the pipes blue?
05/13/08 at 23:27:57

I've got just about 450 miles on an '08 s40, and I still don't have any blue on my pipes. I was wondering, how long does it take for the pipes to start bluing; as I wanted to change the air/fuel mix before then, but was wanting to wait until after the 600 mile service to do it.
Also, as far as popping on shut down, I get only a mild, quiet "puft" when I shut her down, and no backfiring at all during operation. Maybe mine's not so lean. Could it be? Thanks for the help.

No, it's lean.  The EPA is still screwing up our bikes.  Make no mistake.  I have an '05 and mine was just starting to blue at the 600 mile service.  Once it starts, it gets worse and worse.  I think you'll be fine waiting till the 600 mile service, but don't wait much longer than that.  IMHO

Blue pipes are a sign the bike's being ridden!  Think of it as a badge of honor.

My '06 S40 now has a little over 2400 miles.

For the first 2200 or so, I ran Premium (93 octane) in it.  The header started to turn gold but the gold hasn't spread and it's not getting any darker.  It would do the "puft" on shut off as well.

After 2200, I switched to regular gas after reading this thread http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1205207120.  I can make it backfire at highway speeds simply by slamming the throttle closed and the puft's on shut off are a lot louder.

I'll try to shoot some pics of the pipe when I get home, but it's raining here so they might not come out so well.

My S40 is an 05 with 8k and no blue has showed up yet.  Did the carb mod when new. Smiley

Thanks to all. I will do the mod after the 600 mile service. Still waiting for my Clymers. USPS says I should get it tommorrow! Then the little brass plug comes out.

I have a 06 S40 with 10275 miles on it, most are highway miles, and my pipe still has the gold tint to it with some mild bluing for the first half an inch from the head.  I am a conservative rider, although there are times when I run it for 300-400 miles a day at close to if not 70 MPH.  It is 100% stock and I have been told that it shows that it is still perfectly tuned.

take it to the dealer now and have them remove the brass plug and richen the carb. I had 34,000 on my 02 and it had no bluing at all. Just a tint at the header where it bolts into the cylinder. Stops the popping too!
