Gas Tank Graphics

Hey anyone know a good place to get a couple decals to put overtop the savage logo on my 2000 savage tank ? I'd like to have some kind of an eagle decal . I don't really wanna spend alot of money to have it sanded down and repainted with something painted on it i'd rather just save some money and slap some decals on it .

You might get some weird wrinkles in the newer decals if you dont remove the older ones first. That shouldnt be too hard though, theres a variety of posts on how to do it. Then again, probably nobody will notice except you and the very close observer so...

Check the auto parts stores and large chain department stores. They have a few decals of interest and a lot of NASCR stickers.

If you check around your town,, and it's at least of a moderate size, you will probably find a business that makes decals. You can take in your own graphic (watch out for copyright violations) and have them make a couple for you. It costs more than what you would pay at the store but you get what you want.

There are places I found online that sell decal supplies so that you can print them on your home printer thus making your own. They don't hold up in the sunlight as well but you can reprint as often as you like. I would suppose a clear coat over them would extend the UV life quite a bit.

I found that a decal of any size wouldn't bend around the complex  curves of the SoftTail tank. I don't know how they get them to do that. Heat gun or some such?

When you go to install the decal wet the tank down with either a 50/50 mix of alcohol and water or a little dishwashing soap mixed with water. This will allow you to move the decal and remove wrinkles/bubbles after the decal is applied, once it is nice and flat just let it dry, the alcohol/water mix dries much faster than the soap/water mix, but the soap/water mix is easier to work with.

edit: if you leave the old decal on you will be able to see its outline slightly in the new one. So you may want to remove the old decals and sand the clearcoat ridges smooth before applying the new decal.

Good luck!  Grin

the one on my bike in the picture above is totally removable and re-useable. you put it on with dry with the heat from a hair dryer. when you want to remove it, heat it back up and peel it off. You can wash the bike or wax over it.these other ones are also the same material.

Al,

Wow, I've never heard of a reusable decal before, where did you get it? How well does it handle compound curves?

It seems like it would have to be really thick to be reusable, and that would make it difficult on compound curves. My dad is in the graphics business, and he uses a high performnce vinyl that is made for professional automotive applications, and although it is super thin it can only be used on slight compounds.

Make sure you re-jet the carb after you put on any new decals in excess of 6 sq in. total.

i got them from http://www.cyclegraphics.com/. they are having a 50% off sale right now because they are going out of business. They are pretty pliable when you heat them up with a hair dryer.

With the S40's exhaust note, I was thinking either Tecumshe or Briggs and Stratton Grin

Maybe we should use a Rupp Roadster or Blackwidow graphics.... they got Tecumseh's.  It's about time to get the Roadster out and ready for the mini-bike reunion, it's a month away.....
