Tires ?
05/13/08 at 19:13:04

What type of tires do you have on your Savage? Hows the ride and the wear? If you had to replace them would you use the same or go to another brand? I myself don't care for the IRCs and I'm leaning towards Dunlop 555s any one useing these?
Thanks Viper

i've used a couple of Dunlop K555 on the rear and ordered one today to replace the MAXXIS classic WWW that last one season. WWW was fun but  don't need to be buying new rear tire every year. Had hoped to try the new Dunlop tire that has hard center tread and soft corners as my world roads are mostly built on section lines and run straight for miles. Max

The PO put D404's on the rear and had more than half the tread when I bought it.  I went 10k before I changed it for another D404.

I put Dunlop 404s on my bike shortly after I got it.. say 4,500 miles.  I'm at 18,000 now, and could probably another go 1000.  Pretty good run.
Going to try Metzeler ME880's this time.

I just put a Dunlop 404  on my front - a gentlemen in a parking lot on Friday pointed out to me that my IRC was dry rotted. Sure enough! First owner must have left it in the sun and not ridden it.

Turns out because of rust I also needed a new tube - my guardian angel in the parking lot was just that. And he rides an HD.

It already feels better. Of course i don't have much to compare it to. Of course I hadn't planned on spending my summer jacket money on a new tire. Ah well. Time to start saving again.

I just put a 404 on the back....the old one (also a 404) had cord showing!!!!!!!  The ride on the new tire is pretty nice...and grabs better on the corners.

Toymaker what size did you puy on 150-90? No longer can get 140-80s in the 404 thats why I was looking at the 555 they have the same tire pattern the 555 are still made in 140 80 15.

What tire is that?  I'm intrigued.

Any of you guys buy online?  Who's the cheapest and what can I expect to pay for shipping?  I just did a google search and I'm a little overwhelmed!  Smiley

You always need a new tube with a new tire that is being replace because of age or wear and a quality one at that - if you
ride the bike - if it just sits around doesn't matter.

New Dunlop is only showing 17" sizes in the online catalog. I'd guess they are being made for the dual sports made into canyon carvers. Wish I had known about the Bridgestones. Max

No one seems to have the right size in stock.  I did find this online tire calculator: http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/infoTireMath.dos

It helps to understand the differences, but I'm not sure which size I can safely run.

BikeBandit has the K555 in stock for $106.56 to your door, but I think I can find a slightly larger tire cheaper.  The 140/80-15 size doesn't seem to be very popular.

What sizes have you guys ran in the past?

The K555 has deep tread on it and original fitment was Honda PC800 a water cooled shaft drive sport touring bike that is heavier. The load rating is higher on the K555 and sticky is great.  I like it on my bagger. Didn't check online prices and paid more to buy local, but the dealer is getting better and better about discounting and ordering w/o prepayment. I ordered the tire and 2 tubes with 90 degree valve stems for easier air checking and they said they would call me when they arrived. Goes to the tech section and search way back for tires for more information about sizes. Max

You know guys I'm beginning to doubt the ability of my mechanic. He acted surprised that he had to change the tube.  Time to shop i guess.
