Riding w/out a muffler

Hey fellower LS riders I have a question. I have an 06 S40 and was thinking of simply removing the muffler and running it with the straight pipe. Will that be to loud? Will it affect the performance and milage of the bike? This is my first bike so I dont want to mess her up but I want her to growl a bit louder if possible without me growling from shelling out alot for a new muffler.

Any suggestions or advice to this post are greatly appriciated. By the way I love this forum this the best on the net!

Also, you will have to re-tune the carb for that. Just do what I did. I got a slip-on (cost about 50 bucks) and not only do I get more power, but i have a bike that has a good sound.

There's a nice screamin' eagle style muffler for sale on ebay for $49.99. I bought and it sounds great. Your neighbors will be calling the police every time you start it up if you take that muffler off.

Yes.... it would be very loud. And at WOT..."get arrested going by hospitals" loud.

For the price, a Harley take-off is the way to go.

Two ways to get a HD take-off,
1) walk into a HD dealer parts dept, and ask if they have any "Dyna Super Glide" , "Dyna Wide Glide" or "Sportster 1200" take-off's. Tell them it can't be the catalyst type. They will ask you what model & year Hog you have.... just tell them it's for a project... they should be happy with that.
2) ebay , Search "dyna muffler" or "Sportster muffler".

Kirk,
I too have been experimenting without a muffler. I started the bike for about 4 seconds (in my garage) and the place was shaking. Pretty Bad Ass. I was looking to put on a custom straight pipe and I was researching some ways to tone it down and also keep some torque.

1) To tone it down you add a slip on baffle to the inside of the end of the pipe. JC whitney has these for cheap.

2) You can creat a "lollipop"
Basically its a Thumb Screw, a screw with an upright metal piece so you can screw it in with your hand. (looks like a lollipop).
If you screw that into about 4 inches from the end of the straight pipe you can get different sounds and response dependant upon the angle of the head inside the pipe. If the head is perpendicular to the pipe you will get more torque but less sound. If it is parallel to the pipe you get the most sound but no torque.

You can also try adding a Torque cone. They go inside the exhaust at the spot it meets the engine. It reduces the initial size of the exhaust pipe to create some back pressure.

The more open your pipes the bigger pins when you rejet.
