Muff aggro - RESOLVED!
05/06/08 at 10:56:19

I've about had it with the HD muffler on my bike constantly having to be retightened. Dang thing comes loose every week and has ended up being a daily check along with the usual tcloc.

You all have plenty of posts about alternate types of mufflers to install, but has anyone had the muffler WELDED onto the header pipe? How did that work? Any suggestions (or don't ever do this) advice?

I've got a local welding shop that might be able to do it, but wanted to see if there are any issues before I take the bike in.

Or...should I just replace the clamp-on HD muffler altogether?  Undecided

Skatnbnc,
What are you using to clamp it on to the pipe???  Also, same question for the hanger.

My Dyna (aftermarket) pipe is fairly solid but I had to modify the Suzuki clamp.  (drilled out the threaded part and used a grade 8 bolt).

I used the HD camp, and it never came loose.  I used Loctite red stud setting on the threads.

Never had this problem in particular, but Loctite Red has stopped a lot of problems over the years and I would try it before resorting to the weld. Good stuff!

On the FireLizard my Jardine is welded to the pipe. (It was that way when I got the pipe). Don't really have any problems with it except when I have to take the pipe off to do engine work, even then it really isn't a problem so to speak, just awkward because of the size, length and weight.

Get a "U" shape car muffler clamp and crank that baby down hard. The weld might crack from vibration unless you seal the entire joint.

I find the HD clamp works very well but I'm using a correct size adapter pipe between the OE head pipe and the muffler as there is some slight difference in size. Max

Hi skatnbnc,

I think it's just a matter of really cranking down on tightning and " Loctite " wouldn't hurt either.

I cranked mine sooooo tight, it started to collapse the pipe  Tongue

Take care and good luck...Dennis

I had mine welded on and I haven't looked back.

My leg-shield keeps comming loose and rattles, but the muffler is staying in place.

If you have a leg shield, then by all means, get the sportster muff welded in place.

I'm another from the "welding" school of thought. Get it how you want it; weld it, and forget about it. I had a nice shiny TIG weld done on mine, but even gas welding can look ok on oipes. Plus, you're going to cover the area with a heat shield anyways.  Cool

I'm clamping mine with 2 stock clamps until I'm sure I like it , then I will have the local muffler shop weld it solid.

Then it will be "No worries" Wink

Hi Skatnbnc,
If you get to frustrated I have a "Jardene " muffler for sale in the market place,it's a perfect fit all around,it comes with a complete set of jets and a needle,I have it listed for $125 but I haven't had an offer ,so if you make one I would consider it,
be warned this muffler is LOUD ,it also gives you a bit more power.
The chrome is good, very slight bluing at the jount,it's a slash cut ,and looks really cool, let me know.
PS it come's with all the hardwear you will need.
