Motorcycle Emissions Question
05/04/08 at 12:11:15
I recently met up with a guy who imports bikes form the US for sale in Ontario, Canada. I’m contemplating picking up another Savage if he can deliver a really good deal. Are their any other states, besides California, that have rigid EPA standards that I should be aware of? I think he mostly imports from the east coast.

I think the only major change with the California bikes is that Suzuki installed a carbon canister on the crankcase vent line to absorb oil fumes.

I believe that as of recently the EPA stated that California is not allowed to have stricter emissions standards than the rest of the country. I don't know if that was the EPA exercising power they don't actually have or if California will have the national emissions standards for the 2009 model year (probably came a bit too late for 2008 to be effected). No other state has a state-specific model, as far as I'm aware, though some might require California-model standards.

The carbon canister is connected to the vent on the gas tank. Then it's connected to a vac line on the carborator. Nothing to do with the crankcase vent.

My california 2003 model had the same main jet and pilot jet as the rest of the country before I changed them. It has the charcoal canister (CA model only). Don't know why california 99 and 03 models would have diferent jetting?
