2001 parts on a 1987, what fits what

Does anyone know if parts fom a 2001 will fit a 1987? Looking at various parts from a 2001 including a carb, rear sprocket, final drive belt and a motor. My Clymer is for 1986-1988 models and is a first edition published in 1990, so it's not up to date with later models. Thanks in advance.

The carb, pulleys, and belt will fit.  The engine/transmission are a single unit, and while they are different, if replaced as a unit, it should fit and will give you a 5-speed vs. 4-speed.

Tranny and starter intermediate gear, and there are some minor changes to the electrical system and idiot light placement, but most everything is swap-able.     It's one of the endearing features of the bike....

Thank you. I'm thinking seriously about buying the motor/trans if the price is right.
