Can I use the high performance Mobil 1--15w50 or do I need to use an oil that is specifically made for motorcycles? I'm new to this so please bear with me, I will learn! Thanks.

The 'correct' answer is, you shouod use an oil formulated specifically for motorcycle use.

The 'long' answer is, certain automotive application oils (specifically those with a cold viscosity of greater than 15w) can be used in a motorcycle. However, since the additive package of the automotive oil is not intended for the temperature extremes produced by an air-cooled engine, you may not be giving your engine all the protection it deserves.

Motorcycle specific oils have very different additve packages from automotive oils. Specifically, the type and concentration of certain detergents as well as very different friction modifiers. Even with the heavier 15w50 grades.

If you want to give your bike the best, use the motorcycle specific synthetic oils. If you want to use the heavier grade 15w50 automotive synthetic, that would still be better than any conventional oil (motorcycle or automotive).

Everything I say is fully substantiated by my own opinion.

I just went through this very thing a week ago. I put in Mobil 1 15W-50. Kwaknut is our resident expert on the subject and I did this after his heavy recommendations. Please see the following thread from the Cafe for any question you could ever possibly have about why synthetic is better:
