Finally won Road King tank
04/28/08 at 19:06:58

I FINALLY won an ebay auction for a Road King tank. It is about blasted time. And not just any Road King tank but a six gallon Police Road King tank. YES!!!

Even though there were no bidders I still waited until the last five minutes before I bid. Therefore I won the tank at the starting bid price.

I will definitely post pics and instructions of how to install it when I can. But finally, something that is going my way.

SIX Gallons? Thats over 300 MIles! You gonna love that! Fill up 10 times & change the oil, instead of filling up 30 times.

Congrats!  Will that work on the Savage/S40?!?!?!?!?  That would be awesome!!!!!!!  If you figure that out, PLEASE post instructions.  I've been part of a discussion to our fuel tank limitations in another thread, but we haven't come up with any affordable options yet.

I know its wider than the stock Savage tank, but how much taller is it. I am tall as hell and my knees sit at the top of the tank. I wouldn't mind something that makes the bike look a bit more like my size!

I'll be sending the ebay seller a money order on May 2nd and when I get the tank I will post some pics of it. It has a couple of dents in it that I plan to have pulled by our local custom body shop.

Here's some pics of it from the ebay add

Hey just a thought before you get any body work done; maybe you ought to check and see if your handle bars clear lock to lock.

One more detail-that extra 3 gallons of gas up high with affect your handling somewhat, so please go easy at first.

Eventually I will be stretching and raking the neck a bit to fit a 42in (from top tripple tree to axle) custom built inverted springer.

But yes, I am well aware of the difference that the extra weight of the extra fuel will be and I intend to be very ginger with it until I get used to it. Thank you for your concern though it is appreciated.

I don't think Jack_650 had too much problem with his 5 gallon Softail tank conversion. I'll have to ask him.

Hey Jack_650, any problems with your Softail tank conversion concerning top heaviness?

Did Jack ever post a picture of his bike with the Softail tank on it?  I've searched and can't find it anywhere.

He has posted a pic of his bike numerous times, but I can't seem to find it at the moment. It is the yellow bike with the tour tank and Superman symbol on it.

I don't think I've ever seen it.  But I've only been a member for a couple of months.  Maybe that thread has been deleted since then.  I'll just have to wait for your project to be finished.  Wink

I did a nice long answer to the above on the road king tank this morning. And then later when I checked to see what was going on the site was down. Now I see that my hard work and all that typing are not on here.

Long story short, I haven't noticed any problems with the balance of the bike with my 5 gallon SoftTail tank installed. It sits higher but is also is quite a bit wider and hangs lower around the motor. I decided to get rid of my top chrome on the motor. I think the net gain of weight moved upward is about zero.

My bike is so far from stock now that it's impossible to judge anymore the differences from the original geometry. My V-Star seat has me quite a bit higher and the extra 4 gallon tank on the back is fairly high up. Even so I don't notice any thing until I load the bike for long trips. Even then the only problems are when I'm stopped. On the road it's solid as a rock. I just need to figure out how to get the load weight lower. Of course now with the trailer . . .

Here you can see the bike in all it's glory. As can be seen it suffers a bit of an identity crisis. there's so many Harley and other parts on it she don't know what she is any more.

Okay, I'm officially impressed!!!!!  Did you maybe document how you fit it on there?  250 miles to a tank ... oh yea!
