rpgpgmr Senior Member Offline Posts: 270 Huntington, WV Gender:	After-market Spark Plug 04/26/08 at 11:39:23 The SSM says that the ONLY spark plugs we should use (for the '05 models) are either the NGK DPR8EA-9 or the DENSO X24EPR-U9. Is there a better plug out there that you all swear by or is there very little difference between manufacturers?

Found a chart posted by kls650sm2002 a couple of years ago and that pretty much sold it for me. Would the gap be the same (.8 - .9mm) on the iridium plug?

If I remember correctly, they carry NGKs. Got a feeling the dealership is gonna charge me out the $#@ if I buy them there.

Just did a check on Advance Auto Parts adn Autozone and neither have it ... but that doesn't necessarily mean they don't actually. Gonna check them both this afternoon.

The only place I'm aware of (at least in our Tri-State Area) that sells it is Advance Auto Parts for $6.98. They had to order it, but it only took a day. I found it cheaper online, but when you factor in S&H you don't really save.

I have been running really, even with a pod filter and MAC exhaust, and i'm starting to think it's my plug. I will pull it today to see what it looks like but would changing the gap help? I am on a stock 86 carb with stock (rich; for stock) jets. I thought that the open filter and free flowing exhaust would help but so far it hasn't done much.

Like most specific parts, the NKG iridium plug is available through Advance Auto parts if you go to the counter and give them the exact part number -- they can get it from their warehouse in one day.

Advance Auto has the best price on iridium plugs I have found anywhere less than $7 delivered to the store in one day.

Bosch has very interesting looking plugs that cost more and likely do not work any better than the iridium NKGs. For a cheaper double platinum plug try calling Advance Auto and getting them to cross-reference the plug you need to a Autolite platinum plug (double platinum if they have it) -- then go buy the plug from Wal-Mart as they stock the Autolite brand for less $$.

Cheap, yes -- 'ol Jedi Master Yoda would approve.

I however did have a problem. I dropped in the DPR8EIX-9 which is on the list posted on here of compatible spark plugs. It wasn't compatible with mine. I was down for a couple of weeks trying to figure out what was wrong. I did some carb work at the same time so naturally I figured that was what it was. When I was satisfied that the carb was fine I finally checked the spark plug and it was fried! Looked like I'd thrown it in the fireplace for a while.

Went down to Advance, bought the stock plug, and she's run fine ever since. Maybe it's my altitude or maybe it's just my bike, but the DPR8EIX-9 doesn't work in mine.
