Sprung a leak.
04/16/08 at 06:00:20

Well since my upgrades (which have probably turned into downgrades) I have noticed some little black speckles where the muffler attaches to the head pipe in front of the crankcase and also all over the oil window.  I thought it was just a leaking exhaust, but this morning while I was warming it up I got to SEE the speckles falling on the pipe and oil window.  I'm not sure if it's the exhaust anymore ... it could be oil!!!  I turned it off and set it up level to check the oil level and there was nothing.  I'm hoping that it just hadn't had time to trickle back down to the window.  Had to come to work so I can't investigate further until this evening.

Any thoughts on the black speckles?

Take a kleenex ot some white paper & capture the spackles, alive, kill them & do an autopsy to determine if they are Eart creatures or alien.,

Could it be stuff falling off the heat shield?

Do you still have the factory HS on?  If so, there is some material on it that does flake a bit......

I'm not running a heat shield over the muffler/head connection right now.  Didn't think about it when I bought the muffler.  I'm gonna find one and put it on there, but right now it's a bare connection.  The black flakes are all over the ground too right under that spot.  It's nowhere else on the bike so I know it's concerntrated in that general area.

Now that I think about it, I noticed similar flakes on the head pipe up front when I forgot to tighten it (see post in the Moron Hall of Fame).  After tightening it down, the flakes disappeared.  By-products of the chemical reactions taking place in the engine?

Ever heard about 'smokers'?  The vents deep under the sea?
Strange creatures live in them.  Maybe you have some new ones that crap black flakes.

Smokers have been eliminated.  The fitting that my muffler was supposed to sit over was too thick.  So we made one ourselves but it had a split in it.  The soot from the exhaust was getting through this split (which just happened to be right in front of the oil window).  After setting a new fitting ... voila.

So you rpg'd that little smoker to death?
A faint cry could be heard... 'we're here, we're here, WE'RE....' as he stomped and squashed the little black specks.
