Size of Allen wrench for Oil filer change?
04/03/08 at 19:15:13
I've not found it in the Clymer manual or in the nice oil change spread Greg did in the tech section.
There was a guess at 5mm?
Anyone got the definative answer?
Thanks in advance.

Get a set of cushioned 'T' handle metric allen wrenches. Harbor freight has them for cheap, or you can get the good ones from Sears.
Alot of allen-key fasteners tend to get stuck after a long time and regular allen wrenches can bend in the effort to remove them. They also tend to slip off center and can round off the keyed surfaces.
A 'T' handle will allow you the greatest amount of control (leaving the wrench centered in the fastener) and will allow you the most counter torque for fastener removal.
I have the Craftsman set (both standard and metric). They're kind of like an angle grinder. You've gotten along just fine for this long, but after you get one, you wonder how you ever got anything accomplished before.....

Everything I say is fully substantiated by my own opinion.

i had a set of allen sockets from harbor freight. I threw them out after I stripped 4 bolts in 2 minutes. I got a decent set from an auto parts store. those I wondered how I lived w/o!

those are good - if they have them get the ones with ball tip it lets you get to the allen head at an angle

I got tha Harbor Freight T-handle allen wrenches with the different colored plastic handles. So far, no stripping anything out & using plenty of torque.

Well, I picked up a set of Craftsman. They have very nice padded handles. Hopefully, I'll only have to but them once! :^)
