The engine does turn. We put the cover back on (because I had my wife to help at the time) to make things neat and basically get back to where I hsould have been had I not broken the little inspection cover. It was after we had the cover on that I used the socket wrench to turn the crankshaft bolt to the timing mark. Aside from pumping resistance (spark plug not removed) it turned fine. So I passed the test for having the starter gear on the right way? Smiley

I tried a couple metric deep sockets to get the plug off, and couldn't find one that fit. My small size spark plug socket didn't work either, and I don't have a big size any more, so I couldn't try it.

Thanks,
Derek

Great, that's a relief--biggest thing I was worried about.

Now though after reading the valve adjusting writeup, I don't know which part of the stroke I was on! So will check that next weekend. Pretty soon I'll have this down pat!

Thanks,
Derek

well, if you adjusted it to the correct specs, but on the wrong stroke...  well, it sounds like you have a wrench inside the combustion chamber.  I did that my first time...

Yep,  18 mm deep well.  The local Auto-Zone has them at an ok price.
