How much oil ??!
03/27/08 at 15:08:15

Hello all!

I did my first oil change yesterday (bike's second)
Have some 5000km.

I swear I drained all oil out, except maybe drop or two.
Removed filter too. And filler cap (after oil started to drain).
When I was putting fresh oil, instead of 1800 ml (2 quart) I could
only put maybe 1400ml before I was over the top limit for oil?!

I did not buckle bike or shift it left to right because oil plug
is on lowest part of the engine anyway.
And I did not think to do that until I realized I can not put
as much oil as I expected....

I even had to let some oil out and it was clean...

Had engine running for a while, as soon as it shuts off oil
comes to the top of allowed range. Even went for short ride,
same thing...

I will check again today when I come home but I think
it has all the oil it can take...

What did I miss ???

And second question.
Manual said 6000km or 12 months for oil changes.
I know some people here do it every 1500 miles.
Is it necessary?

Thanks!

Ermin

Beleave it or not, you're supposed to hold the bike upright while you check the oil.

A block of wood under the kickstand to get it almost upright works ok.

And while you're on your knees, grab the handlebar and squeeze the brake and pull it up fully upright.

You can have someone do it for you or call them later to get the bike off of you.   Grin

Oh I did that.
Hold the brake and pull bike upright while hunching down to see.
When bike is leaning on the stand oil windows is empty.

Btw thanks for those sportster seat modification pictures.
I wanted to do same thing but ended up making smaller bracket.
It worked great, now I just need to put some hours on it...

So Filter will soak up half quart?
Maybe... I'll keep watching it...
Suzuki also states that with oil filter change it should be
2400 ml oil and with no filter change 1800 ml...
Either way I seem to have something taking up oil space
inside Smiley

I tip the bike over from side to side to get all of the oil that's up near the starter. That probably doesn't account for half a quart, but does get more fresh oil in there.

If someone can get a pint of oil in that filter & wanna be there to see that!
Getting the bike straight up & down AND leaning over far enough to get an eyeball kinda level with the window, so you arent looking down at the thing & making it seem like the oil level is lower than  it is, isnt all that easy. I can do it, but then, I am pretty flexible. You would be too if you had been wrapped around as many solid objects as i have. But, IF you cant bend that well, then block it as much as is safe. It needs to be level, front to back, too. If you know its not standing straight up, but leaned a bit to the sidestand side, then the oil in the window will show to be a bit low. Adjust accordingly. I just dump 2 quarts in when I do the change now. For a long time I agonized over that .1 quart, then I decided it would be just fine with 2 quarts. Now, I change oil, & after 800 or so miles it usually needs a slosh. Sometimes less. Seems that once it starts needing a bit, it KEEPS needing a bit. Prolly oughta just change it when it starts using the oil in the engine. But, I figure the wear is acceptable & the bike will last as long as I will, as is. If not, Ill fix it in 15 years or so..
