How can i get the Belt sprocket thing off.
03/26/08 at 19:55:18

Should first find out what its called prolly, but anyway... I bought an engine and a Clymer manuel...through the engine on my frame and was workin on putting the belt on today when i realized i cant take the belt sproket thing off.  In the manuel it says have someone hold the rear brakes and then take it off? It says something about a lock washer to.  Everytime i crank on the bolt it just trys to turn the engine over... ANY help would be awesome...and if you have no idea what piece im talkin about let me know...so i can work on explain this better...you guys are the s@$# by the way.  Jess

Are you talking about the front pulley the belt rides on? If that's it.If all else fails. What I've done is pull the side cover off of the engine(it'll require a new gasket). Then put the belt on,then reassemble side cover.

basically the manuel is writtin assuming the belt is on the sprocket when you want to take it off, my problem is the belt is off but i still need to get the dang sprocket off.  So i cant use the resistence of the belt to get the bolt off.  Help please.

If you're reassembling the bike, what I said before, you don't have to remove pulley.
Responded before you did Grin.
The only time I've had to do it,that's how I did it, removing the cover.

You might try with an impact gun.But don't try all at once(squeeze trigger, and hold)Try shocking it loose(squeeze trigger,release..repeat)
I know sounds stupid, hopefully you understand what I mean. Grin

Squirt a little oil in the cylinder so you got good compression. (replace sparky)

Something else you might try (at your own risk, I'm only thinking out of the box)
Loop the belt over the shock mount and then wrap the belt around the pulley engaging the teeth, and back to the shock mount.  Hopefully it's not long enough, take a strap and tie it off on the shock mount.
The danger here would be you tear thru the belt.
Engine not in frame? Take the rear pulley off of the wheel, loop belt around both, coil the belt on the bottom and push it up between the 2 pulleys.  Have a friend push down on the rear pulley to keep it from turning.  This might work, but it may turn anyway.  So clamp a bar to the pulley to give him some leverage (give me a fulcrum and a lever long enough and I'll move the world)

I would take a pair of wooden blocks & clamp them to the belt as close to the front pulley as possible, supporting the belt evenly all the way across the width of the belt. That won't be able to turn far before it gets against something, surely.

Impact Gun/wrench, either air powered or an electric one.   If you don't have one, find a neighbor, friend or relative that does.  Or, rent one....

Also,  there should be a flat washer that is bent up against one of the flats of the nut to act as a locking washer.  Look close.  The nut won't budge much if you didn't bent the washer back down....

12 volt impact, harbor freight, $30.00. Check aroound online. Or , if you have a compressor available, get an air powered one, check pawnshops. Tools are a good investment. Like a manual is a good investment.
