Help needed for new owner of a German imported Sav
03/26/08 at 05:10:16

Hello I was just wondering if any one could help me with a problem my bike has just developed.
Its a german import 1998 model.
She goes wonderfull for a good 5 -10 miles then suddenly she will start dying on me (bit coughy and spluttery) but if I open the throttle a bit she seems to come back to life, as soon as I ease off the throttle she starts to die again.
When shes doing this if I change down a gear she dies completely ( avery silent death no coughing or warning).
To satrt her again I have to use the choke or switch to PRI even if the engine is hot.
I assume its a fuel problem and a few people have said that it sounds like a blockage.
If I ride her on Reserve she does try to die a little but doesnt actually die.
Is this a common fault or a freak fuel problem?
Also does any one know where I can get a manual for her that is for the right year and model. I have one but for the earlier Savage and its not much help.

Thanx Shocked

Many problems like this are caused by the either by the petc0ck or the vacuum line that runs from the back side of it to the right(starboard) side of the carb - the petc0ck is vacuum operated - if the line is cracked or doesn't fit tight it is problem - if the diaphram inside of the petc0ck is starting to leak it is a problem - it allows fuel to be sucked into the vacuum line - so pull this line and check for any gas in it - never should be any - inspect the line for cracks - or just replace it

another area that will produce such problems is the carb slide - if the slide has gotten dirty it will hang up on the way back down - this will cause it to flood out the ngine at lower rpms

I'd pull the petcock and check the screen for blockage.
When you pull the vac line, it should be dry.
Next pull the carb and clean it.
