I've found a new Dunlop 404 tire in 80/90 for 21 bones
would this work well on the savage?

That's .394" skinnier than the 90/90 that someone here is running on the front...
If I had one, I'd mount it and take a few slow, easy test runs around the block to see if I could notice a difference...but that's just me
You could only expect a guy like Oldfeller to actually try something like that

Actually, I prefer a slightly larger than stock front tire format using an old style hard rubber tread/rib pattern.
