Oil leak from the engine...
03/19/08 at 14:58:07

I have 2001 Savage...
It has some sort of oil leak in the engine... It runs fine but after a long ride I have noticed that the engine ridges are covered in oil. It doesn't leak enough to have to refill it or even add oil ever! So I had a machanic tell me that I had a busted seal. The oil seems to gather half way down and slatters back onto my pants and the battery box... Any suggestions about where to start or what might be a good way to fix it without having to take the engine apart and replace all the seals? Huh

Sound like the infamous head plug leak. da da da duh!

Got a manual?

It's a $4 little rubber plug that you gotta pull to torque down the head bolts from the top, but underneath the head cover.  So it's a lot of fun to get at.

Check the tech section for head plug, I know it's in there.   Grin

Head plug, loose head bolt, loose valve inspection cover.

Try the obvious ones first.  If not, you're going to end up pulling the head anyway.  Maybe you'll get lucky.

Take a small bright flashlight, and shine it up into the hole behind where the exhaust pipe goes into the engine.  On the upper surface, you should see the plug everyone is mentioning.

No, not that side, on the left side.  There you go.  All black in there?

It you have any doubt, spray engine cleaner in there, wash it off, don't worry it will show up again.   Grin

On the two I work with I could see the plug jiggle up and down as the engine ran and watched the oil ooze by the plug. When you park the bike on the side stand it will drip off the lower left corner of the head. When you are driving it will blow all over the side tins, battery and tool box. About a 4 hr job, be sure to get Greg's CD that has lots of pictures and instructions. Max

If it's the cap plug,  it's not a pressure leak.  The plug is in the path of the oil returning to the sump.

Just a messy annoyance.... Tongue

So I got to the plug/cap no prob...

My question now is does it just pull off or how does it come out?
And also what is the cable that is located directly under the cover for (what does it do)?

One more question, I think I just missed where it is or maybe I was just so tired last night I didn't see it... It was like 11:30 which is late for me anyway back to the question... the O ring that is shown in the tech documents that you need to replace where is that at? I didn't see one that size?

Look up head plug/cap in tech.It sounds like you have not gone far enough.Did you only remove the chrome covers so far?The whole top of the head has to come off.

Yes, please go to the tech ref forum and read the thread(s) on this issue.  There is a lot of info already compiled that answers most questions.  If you still have questions, come back to this forum and post them.
