Seems to me the only difference was the black finish on the S 40 engine vs aluminum on the LS 650. Other S40 changes were seat, turn/running lights and headlight off on crank. Oh and different bar style. Max

My '03 Savage had the black-out treatment on the engine ... Savage's have had 5-speed tranny's for quite awhile too (they were 4-speed in the 80's I believe?) ... no major changes between late-model Savage's and the Boulevard S40 ... only cosmetic tweaks (and the lighting mods Max mentioned)!

Good so a 05 engine will work on an 87 frame.  I thought that was right. My brother had me worried!

get the electronics from the '05 to go along with the engine - see your not jumping back one but really two generations before the EPA had their way with the machine

if you keep searching back you have

http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1168897615/2#2

if I remember correct Kropatchek did the swap - they have many more of the older engines around in Eu as they didn't stop selling them from 89-94 like suzuki did in the us
