decompression solenoid (Read 69 times)

rocky YaBB Newbies Offline I love YaBB 1G - SP1! Posts: 26	decompression solenoid 03/01/08 at 18:53:15 This a silly question, but______________ and I do have a manual, will the decompression solenoid only extend when the the engine is set at tdc on the compression stroke?

The solenoid is electrical and controlled by a timer, it only pulls the exhaust valve off its seat for a very short time to allow the engine to spin up enough on low/no compression and then closes so it will have compression and start and run. If you need to work with it. use a fused test lead and feed it direct in short bursts to check its operation/adjustment. On my B-i-L's 88 I had to R &R and clean the years of dust and road junk to make it work correctly. It then cranked and started like a Savage should. Cost the seller $400 when he jumped started it direct on the starter motor and I wouldn't pay what he was asking for a bike that wasn't right. If you have a marginal battery that solenoid may not work correctly and cause cranking starting problems. Max

I don't think there's anything that will inhibit the solenoid from extending. Only retracting, the ig has to be on, run on, in neutral, and clutch pulled in. If it doesn't extend, then either a spring is broke or the cable is jammed.

Seems like ours pulls the cable to crack open the exhaust valve. Max
