uphill troubles
02/27/08 at 15:20:31

The road that my school's main entrance is off of is a long uphill climb and 75% of the time I get stuck at the light waiting for a left turn.  It seems like the bike always wants to stall out, but so far I've been sweating my nuts off and keeping the rpm high as to prevent that.

The bike is running lean right now.

Is this from a float issue?  Will it be fine once I fatten the mix up?

You might want to increase the idle a bit, too many people want to hear each thump. Cheesy.it's supposed to be at around 1000 rpm if memory serves.

Yep,  try upping the idle.

Without a tach, finding 1000 to 1200 is a bit hard.  Maybe you can find a shop to throw a tach on for you .......  or maybe find a school that might do it for you.

1000 rpm / 60 = 17 rps

2 rev's per exhaust note

~8 putts per second.

A little faster than I can count.   Grin

keep mine at 1100 , 1000 sounds better but stalls out some times,1200 sounds too fast..best to set after long ride when thourghly warmed up..

Ok,  Below is what I think is slow & fast as best as I can tell from what my bike sounds like with my MMB tach. set to ~1100 rpm

It should be noted that the sound may vary depending on your internet connection speed.  Where I'm at now, we have a super fast connection.   If you have a slow Dial-up connection, find someone with a faster connection or go to your local library and see what they have.

From "YouTube":

Slow:

Slow

A little slow (EDIT: 1120 rpm, per fancy software check by Moofed)

A little  slow but close....

Hmmm  may be fast ....  close to 1200 maybe,
Big note here : THIS MUFFLER LOOKS AND SOUNDS ALSO MOST EXACTLY LIKE MY BIKE. Don't know whose bike this is....

Almost right on

Almost right on (EDIT: 1360 rpm, per fancy software check by Moofed, actually a little fast)

A bit fast

A bit fast

Would be good to have someone else double check me out here......

Don't know if they are still available, but before everything went electronic, cheap tach/dwell meters were readily available.

I think I got it.  Turned up the idle pretty high.  I'll take my computer down sometime and record the bike and use Garageband to find out how many thumps per second I'm putting out

Wow, that first bike has quite the blued muffler.  I am a bit jealous.  It either indicates a lot of run time, or a really cheap pipe.

Who'd a thunk it..sounds like you're about right on with the slow and fast..and apparantly about 1100 is the goal.  Thanks for the heads up.

Mine is similar style and is bluing there too.  It's where the muffler deflects the gases into a single wall section.   I think it's bluing because of the singel wall construction.....   Sad

ok - without a tach a good way to set the idle on this engine is to watch the head light - it should not dim at idle - get in a dark place and look see - idle it down until it does and raise the idle until it doesn't
