removing shocks and hardtailing
02/11/08 at 17:48:24

Im going to gradually bob my bike (as it my only mode of transportation)

Being such, I want to have the option of adding saddlebags (or boxes) but the shocks are a huge obstacle in that endeavor.  I want to remove the rear shocks and replace them with a solid piece.  Does someone manufacture these pieces or am I going to have to get one fabricated?

it's a dyi job.   make sure you reinforce the upper right shock mount, that's the weak point.

For reinforcing, welded gussett.

For struts, drill holes in bar stock.

how many gussets and in any particular arrangements?

PS- why the upper right? isnt the upper left the longer and therefore weaker?

Nope.  I don't like litigation.

I'd talk to a known fabricator near you.  By him lunch or a beer and get his input.

the other thing about hardtailing...

do I need a really hard tail for it?

I want to get a springer seat at some point, but I have to take this in baby steps because money is tight.
