I didn't see anyone mention TDC on the compression stroke.

Do you have a manual?

Do you have a Photo CD?

Absolutely.  Not just TDC, but TDCC!

Yes.. What the other guys said!  There are TWO top dead centers on the bike....  ( I learned that the hard way when I adjusted my valves the first time.)

You have to make sure that you are at TDC on the compression stroke.

just to continue the thought a little - being on the compression stroke is far more important than being exactly at TDC

Personally, I like the wooden dowel in the sparkplug hole trick.

Personally, I like the plastic soda straw in the spark plug hole trick better, less chance of breaking and leaving something inside the cylinder.

Same idea though, you can watch the valves open & close and think you have TDC on compression properly ID'd

but KNOWING it by watching the straw move out is always better.

Yep, but the stick or straw (or timing mark) doesn't know the difference in TDC Compression and TDC Exhaust.  Therefore you still have to watch the valves move.

If you don't understand that the Intake valves will open and close before TDC Compression, you just might adjust the valves after the Exhaust valves close instead.

Of course, if you are really anal, you could always remove the headcover, set the camshaft position, reinstall the headcover, and then adjust the valves...Tongue
