Strange Smell
01/22/08 at 17:53:04

The last two times I rode my 06 S40, I smelled a strange smell when I turned it off after about 6-7 miles.  It smelled like it came from the engine or the pipe.  I Just waxed the chrome which included the chrome covers on the engine.  If I had forgot some of the wax, would it give off a smell when it got hot?  The second time, it didn't seem to smell as bad.  I checked the oil, it is at the correct level.  It does not smell like any wiring, or oil, I know what that smells like.  If the belt is rubbing on the front sprocket, would that be a possibility?  It runs great as it always has, and there are no odd noises.
Any suggestions?

Wax sounds like a probablity -- put a dab in a skillet and heat it on the stove to see if you get the same smell.

Don't get caught by the cook! (You might try using a disposable aluminum pie tin.)

If you sorta bump a plastic bag when putting the bike into the garage it'll stink of burning plastic for about a month.  It eventually fades away.

I believe it was wax on the backside of the pipe, or a critter is not out of the question, since it was sitting for a few days while it was in the 30's and raining.  I tend to lean to the wax because goes away a little each time I run it.
Thanks to all who responded

Since it runs "as great as always" I doubt that you have problem.
