Most likely you got the wrong type of O-ring.

The material should rated for automotive use.   Grin

Neoprene is good.  Pretty standard.  Mine's been installed for about 4 years too.

I guess that when I get a chance, I'll put a caliper on mine and post it.

I'll put a notation on the photo in the Savage CD too.

I usually use nitrile for petroleum resistance.

Neoprene as quoted from the Dupont web site here:

http://www.dupontelastomers.com/Products/Neoprene/neoprene.asp

"Neoprene polychloroprene is an extremely versatile synthetic rubber with more than 75 years of proven performance in a broad industry spectrum. It was originally developed as an oil-resistant substitute for natural rubber. Neoprene is noted for a unique combination of properties, which has led to its use in thousands of applications in diverse environments.

A Balanced Combination of Properties

   * Resists degradation from sun, ozone and weather
   * Performs well in contact with oils and many chemicals
   * Remains useful over a wide temperature range
   * Displays outstanding physical toughness
   * Resists burning inherently better than exclusively hydrocarbon rubbers
   * Outstanding resistance to damage caused by flexing and twisting"

So, with that in mind, ya'll can run around all over the place looking for a special o-ring, or tape, or you can go down to a local hardware store and be done with it.

It finally warmed up to 38F this weekend so I could work on the bike.  Here are photos of what my issues were about.  Notice the carbon black on the pipe before the header-to-exaust joint, and likewise on the inside of the heat shield.

I cleaned all that off and banged the pipe back on again. This time I tightened the clamp as hard as I could with my socket wrench.

The other pic is of the leak on the nameless hose. I cleaned that off too and will not be messing with it for now.

Hint: It's not the clutch, has a cable that goes round and round, and I was asking for the dimensions of the little O-ring that prevents the leak you're talking about just a couple of weeks ago.

Did you get the dimensions, or do you want me to measure mine?

I surrender on trying to get the dang photos to load. Check out my BikePics site for really detailed pictures of this issue.

skatnbnc under the personal photos section. I posted the close up of the exhaust pipe clamp and the mystery hose connector.

Okay, here is a better pic of the clamp and carbon black leaking.
