I have one of those, I'd kinda worry that I'd sand of too much!
But do you actually want to remove the head to do it? I had the head off on mine.
It would be different if the fins were flat on the edges. You can try it with the head installed, but it will be hard to make it good and even...IMO

That's why I thought I might run into trouble, wasn't planning on taking the head off!

And here she is. This is her debut so to speak. Had to roll her out in zero degree weather to take the pic. I hope this works.
I found you the perfect jacket to go with your bike! Only $20, on ebay!
Not sure what size you wear though.

Bill, next time you go to a dealer take a close look at the fins on a new one and then compare them to yours. The edges have a different finish on them.

And here I thought you had done it yourself and knew how to do it effectively!
Right now actually, I'm going to try and clean the black paint and coat it with some high heat engine enamel I found. I think I want it shinier, and easier to clean! The mud really doesn't want to come off the flat black paint, and it rains too much over here.

Being a home builder all my life and working with a belt sander and on metal too it would be very easy.Did you every drive a moto guzzi motorcycle if you haven't then you wouldn't be able to ride it. same difference.

I work a lot with the belt sander to, but on wood (which is not nearly as forgiving as metal I think! It's really very strong, and I can barely hold on to it once it goes. So I'm worried about using it on the bike..... chances are that I will accidentally hit something I didn't mean to!!

Sanding block would require more elbow grease , but would offer way more control.
Note: they do make a engine clear coat.......

I also took a fingernail buffer from walmart and buffed and shine the fins shiner than it came and polish it with three coats of zaino polish I like the way it looks.

Okay. My mistake, but that explains why you don't understand. The earlier models don't have those nice clean edges.
